The final-year project of Didula Dissanayake, Amila Silva, Chathurika Amaratunga, and Namasivayam Piranavaruban titled “Light Field System for Image Based Rendering of Ancient Artifacts” won the prestigious Manamperi Engineering Award 2017, awarded by Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) for the best engineering final year undergraduate group project carried out in a Sri Lankan university in 2016.
The light field rendering system comprises an end-to-end system that automatically acquires images of an artifact kept on a rotating table, makes the 3-D reconstruction, and renders the reconstruction using color information from images. A user can then interact with this high-quality
digital archive of the artifact using a mobile device or otherwise, or make a 3-D print.
The project was co-supervised by Dr. Chamira Edussooriya and Dr. Ranga Rodrigo.
